Stormwater and flooding management

CORE SERVICES

Key
Competencies

  • Ok Tedi and Fly Rivers. Hydrodynamic and Sediment Transport Modelling, Ok Tedi Mining Limited (owner, operator of the Ok Tedi gold and copper mine, PNG). Project aimed at investigating the consequences of tailings dam failure on the downstream river reaches. Work included hydraulic and sediment transport modelling, geomorphic interpretation of long term river behaviour, development of recommendations for long term management (i.e. dredging, location and frequency).
  • Stream Restoration, Sydney Water Corporation R&D project. The aim of the project was to identifying opportunities for restoring degraded rivers and streams within Sydney. Work included identifying best practice for stream rehabilitation (including case study review), and develop and document environmental, social and economic criteria that can be used to assess the need for and practical application of rehabilitation proposals.
  • Observed rates of contaminant export from the Lake Burragorang and Nepean catchments, Sydney Catchment Authority. The purpose of this study was to quantify the instantaneous export rates for nutrients and solids during storm events. In addition, to investigate the usefulness of explanatory variables related to land use and physical characteristics of the sub-catchments in understanding the differences in export coefficients between catchments. Work included data collection and analysis, in order to develop an innovative method for quantifying export rates.
  • Haslams Creek Flood Study, Homebush Bay Development Secretariat, Premier’s Dept., NSW. Project was aimed at assessing the risk of flooding along the yet to be developed area of Homebush Bay, including the Sydney Olympic Park. Work involved hydrologic study review, data collection and survey, hydraulic modelling (2D unsteady numerical model) and detailed hydraulic assessment of various structures along the tidal river reaches.
  • Cup and Saucer Ck Flood study, Sydney Inner West Councils, NSW. Project was aimed at assessing the risk of flooding along this fully urbanised area of Sydney. Work involved hydrologic study review, data collection and survey, hydraulic modelling (1D unsteady numerical model) and detailed hydraulic assessment of various structures along the creek reaches.
  • Georges River Flood Study, Public Works Department NSW. Project was aimed at assessing the risk of flooding along this fully urbanised area of Sydney. Work involved hydrologic study review, data collection and survey, scale hydraulic model construction, calibration using two large historical floods and development of detailed flood maps.
  • Launceston Flood Protection Scheme re-assessment, Launceston City Council. Project was aimed at assessing the performance of the old Launceston Flood Protection Scheme and associated risk of flooding, as well as developing additional measures of reducing the impact on residents living within the area. Work involved hydrologic study review, hydraulic modelling (2D unsteady numerical model) and detailed hydraulic assessment of various structures along the South Esk and Tamar river reaches.
  • North Esk Flood study, Launceston City Council. Project Manager and senior engineer responsible for hands-on delivery of the project. Project was aimed at assessing the risk of flooding, and developing measures of reducing the impact on residents living within the catchment area. Work involved hydrologic study review, hydraulic modelling (2D unsteady numerical model) and detailed hydraulic assessment of various structures along the North Esk river reaches.
